Huskies disappointed following poor opener
February 28, 2008
The UW women’s golf team punched out in 15th place yesterday at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The team finished with a score of 91-over 943, a disappointing 59 strokes away from first place.
The team was never placed higher than 13th, as they faced tough competition including No. 1 Duke, No. 2 USC and No. 3 UCLA. Coach Mary Lou Mulflur was disappointed with her team’s finish.
“Well, we didn’t play very well, obviously,” she said.
No. 15 Oklahoma State University won the tournament with a score of 32-over 884. OSU was closely followed in the rankings by No. 3 USC and No. 1 Duke; both tied for second at 34 over 886.
Junior Amanda Blumenherst of Duke placed first individually, shooting an even par 213. She was the only player to remain below par for more than one round in the tournament.
Freshman Anya Alvarez led the Huskies, shooting an 18-over 231 in the tournament tying for 40th place overall.
Alvarez shot a consistent 6-over 77, 7-over 78 and 5-over 76 in each successive round. Sophomore Molly Aronsson finished one stroke behind her with a 19-over 232, tying for 44th overall.
Rounding out the Huskies were sophomore Christina Yoon who scored 24-over 237; freshman Karinn Dickinson, who finished 35-over 248; and freshman Katie Saucier who finished with a score of 38-over 251. No Husky players shot under par for any round.
Dissatisfied with her team’s performance, Mulflur feels that the Husky golfers need to work most on their mental game.
The tournament was not all negative. Sophomore Molly Aronsson shot a 2 over 73 in the first round tying for 19th place overall for that round. The Huskies best round was their first when the team combined for a 23 over 307.
Despite its low finish in this tournament, the team is upbeat about its chances for the season.
“We’re good. We’re fine,” Mulflur said.
The Huskies will have under a week to make improvements as they head to San Jose, Calif., for the Spartan Invitational on Monday.
