The regular season will come full circle for the UW women’s basketball team this weekend as they face off against the two teams they started the Pac-10 schedule against: No. 7 Stanford and No. 9 California.

It is also senior weekend for the Husky women (12-16, 7-9 Pac-10), as Emily Florence and Andrea Plouffe will be playing their final two games at Hec Edmundson Pavilion before moving on to bigger and better things.

“There’s going to be a lot of emotion building,” UW coach Tia Jackson said. “We definitely want to send Emily and “Dre” (Plouffe) out with a bang.”

The two seniors will have to battle against the top two teams in the Pac-10 when Stanford (25-3, 14-2 Pac-10) rolls in Friday and California (23-4, 14-2 Pac-10) Sunday.

UW lost both of its early matchups against the two Bay Area schools by large margins: 77-42 to Stanford and 66-40 to Cal.

“Starting on the road for Pac-10 play at the Bay Area schools was definitely a challenge,” Jackson said. “But it’s a good thing that we’re ending with them to see where we are.”

Jackson also said the Dawgs have improved a lot since their previous battle down by the Bay, but they still have to contend with the best in the conference.

Stanford senior guard Candice Wiggins leads the Pac-10 in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game, while sophomore Jayne Appel complements nicely with 14.7 points per game and nine rebounds per game.

Contrast the Cardinal’s threats to Washington’s, where freshman Katelan Redmon averages 12.0 points per game and their leading rebounding threat is Florence, averaging 6.4 a game.

But, Jackson said, the Husky women have learned over the course of the season to give it their all, whether they play Stanford, Cal or Washington State.

“This will definitely be a test of how much we’ve grown and improved as a team,” Jackson said.

After the final series, the Husky women will have another test to take. The Pac-10 Tournament is in one week and much of this weekend’s results could make an impact on the tournament seeding.
