We want our pub in the HUB

This year’s round of ASUW elections ended with cheers for some and tears for others. Besides the write-ins for campus squirrels, The Daily’s copy of the voting results had one interesting survey hidden away on the last page.

More than 67 percent of voting students supported the idea of a restaurant with a liquor license in the HUB. The idea, popularly called the “pub in the HUB,” seems like nothing the UW administration would even think of approving — but they should.

There are probably legal implications for the administration to worry about and uneasy janitors uneager to clean up after undergraduates who didn’t quite make it to the bathroom.

But the idea might not be so absurd. Students drink already. Everybody knows that. And the Ave isn’t always the safest place to relax for a few drinks on a Friday night. Sharing a few drinks on campus in a building whose sole purpose is to serve students doesn’t seem like such a terrible thing.

By building a pub in the HUB, the university could acknowledge and address an aspect of student life evident everywhere from the residence halls to the Ave to the Greek community.

And it would be safe. UWPD has a more immediate presence on campus to regulate student drinking. And the same laws would apply to students stupid enough to leave the pub obviously drunk: a citation for public intoxication.

The idea isn’t ridiculous nor is it dangerous. The HUB might actually be the safest place for a student to drink.

And don’t forget the faculty and staff. Professors who prefer to hold office hours in a more relaxed atmosphere than their offices wouldn’t have to march down to the Ave, especially when it’s January and raining buckets.

There is so much focus on undergraduates at the UW — first-year programs, the common book and FIGS, for example — that the concerns of graduate students are sometimes left by the wayside.

Abundant academic accommodations exist for grad students, but the well-being of graduate students isn’t readily apparent on campus. A pub in the HUB might address some of those needs by providing a place for grad students to mingle with their peers.

Granted, not all graduate students drink, nor are all undergraduates older than 21 years old, but the UW should consider providing a place where its of-age staff, faculty and students can have a drink on campus.

Any reasonable establishment can regulate who enters the pub. Any reasonable establishment can tell when someone’s had too much. The HUB closes at midnight anyway, meaning last call for alcohol would be at about 11:15 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday night — not quite a place to party.

Plans are in the works to begin renovating and expanding the HUB during spring quarter 2010. Part of that plan is to add dining space. Allocating some of that space to a pub isn’t absurd, if managed correctly.

The University of Washington Club is directly across Stevens Way from the HUB and serves alcohol. The club is open to staff, faculty, and alumni. Grad students currently on the payroll are eligible to join for about $12/mo.

UW Club doesn't address all your concerns, but it does address many, and probably enters into the thinking of the administration.

Finding enough room for RSOs and event spaces for students, faculty, staff and visitors should be the top priority for the HUB renovation.

While a Pub in the HUB might be fun, it is highly impractical. While many students can hold their liquer and act like adults, let's be honest most can't. The AVE is not that far away, just walk.

And if you are concerned about safety on the AVE perhaps more effort should go into cleaning it up instead of avoiding it.

Having a "pub in the hub" is a campaign that was launched by immature students with friends at WSU who constantly brag to them about the "drinking privileges" that they have on their campus. We are NOT WSU! This is THE University of Washington! A prestigious, reputable, world class learning institution! If you really want to be able to drink on campus, you should pack your bags and move to Pullman. The AVE is within a short walking distance for those who feel the need to "wet their whistle" so that they can appear to be "cool" and "all grown up now." If your friends at WSU have drinking privileges on campus, don't be jealous. Rise above the hype, and show them that we are much more civilized here at the UW, and that we do not need alcohol (as they do) to be cool. Again, remember that the UW is an honorable, world-class, prestigious learning institution, and NOT a place where young men and women "come to party." You're here to become the future leaders of the great state of Washington. Have some PRIDE folks....dammit!

None of the above have ever spent almost every waking hour on campus. Welcome to the life of an engineer. I go to class 15 hours a week and spend 7-8 more daily on campus. It would be very nice to have a convenient place to grab a brew and have a project meeting. I could enjoy a cold one while hammering-out thousands of lines of code.

Then again, UW is a commuter school and has a horrible campus life. So the pub would probably lose quite a bit of money and wind-up having terrible hours, selection, and service. And it'd likely wind-up in some fee be charged to me on top of my out-of-state tuition that I'd have no control over. So yeah... maybe it's not such a great idea.

Pub in the HUB is a horrible idea. Honestly, this article did point out one probably overlooked aspect: the custodians. However, they failed to have an even remotely compassionate view for them. Don't you think they have enough to do? Actually, I feel this entire article was written from a selfish point of view. "sure, not all the grads drink, and not all the undergrads are over 21, but cum'on! we want a place to drink."

And as for regulating who comes in to the establishment, I doubt that will be a tightly followed plan- I already see people who clearly are not students in the HUB- so let's all be brilliant and add alcohol to the mix. I thought we were concerned about campus safety, but apparently I was wrong.

And, as everyone else has pointed out- the Ave is NOT that far away. Get off your lazy bums and walk there. Besides, if you're going to be drinking you could probably use the exercise (because there's a whole lot more calories in alcoholic beverages than most people realize). Clearly, pub in the HUB will contribute to America's obesity problem, because we all know that the cause is increased caloric intake with a decreasing amount of physical activity.

And read UW Alum's comment. Right on UW Alum!
