Spirits are high for the Husky track and field team as it prepares for the NCAA West Regional Championships — the last meet before nationals.

“We’ve had a great last four years,” coach Greg Metcalf said. “Since the inception of the Regional Championships, we’ve gone to the regional meet and done well.”

Metcalf highlighted what’s at stake this Friday and Saturday in Northridge, Calif.:

“The premium of this meet is all about place. The top five [for each event] qualify for the National Championship.”

Metcalf noted several events in which the Huskies could be very competitive for a top-five spot. On of those events is the men’s long jump, in which senior All-American Norris Frederick will be one of the best competitors.

“[Norris is] fired up, and I know there’s a series of big jumps that are coming,” Metcalf said. “He’s been tearing it up in the high jump as of late, and I think the long jump this weekend at Northridge is a good step in the right direction for Norris.”

Frederick will face Reindell Cole of Cal State, Northridge on his own campus. Cole defeated Frederick in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.

Metcalf also has high hopes for senior Austin Abbott in the 800-meter.

“He was a little dinged up last weekend, but he had a great Pac-10 meet and ran a pretty big PR (personal record),” Metcalf said. “He ran a mark that should get him to the NCAA Championships, a mark that potentially could get him to the Olympic Trials.”

Senior 1500-meter runner Amanda Miller has Olympic Trial aspirations as well, a goal she would like to improve upon this weekend at the West Regionals.

“I would love to take a couple of seconds off my PR and get a better Olympic Trial “B” standard qualifying time so I can make the Olympic Trials. All I need to do is make the finals and get ready for nationals,” Miller said.

“Of course I’d like to get top five anyway.”

Miller is an All-American and was named to the All-West Region team for two straight years. “I think that’s definitely doable since I took fifth at Indoor Nationals,” she said.
