Boase sets record, but Cougars ultimately win
May 5, 2008
Jordan Boase, All-American sprinter, set his second record-breaking, regional-qualifying mark this season, this time in the 200-meter dash at the annual UW-WSU dual meet. Boase’s time of 20.37 seconds placed him right on top of the NCAA 200-meter times this season, and second all-time in the University of Washington record books.
Boase was unable to carry the Huskies, however, as the 25th-ranked Cougar men defeated the 30th-ranked Huskies 92-71, snapping the Huskies’ three-meet win streak. The Cougar women dominated the shorthanded Husky roster, making it four years in a row that they have beaten Washington, this time with a 116-47 victory.
The Husky men’s team picked up multiple regional qualifiers along the way, with many first-place finishes, to keep the team competition close with the Cougars.
All-American jumper senior Norris Frederick picked up two wins and two more regional qualifying marks in the long and high jumps, as well as setting a personal record in the high jump at a height of 7-3 1/4 feet.
Sophomore thrower Zack Midles competed in three events and won two, setting a regional mark in the hammer throw.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay won a close race, barely beating the Cougars by .12 seconds. Both teams set regional qualifying times.
Senior James Fredrickson, part of the Husky 4x100 team, achieved entry into the NCAA Regional Championships in the 400-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 51.23 seconds.
Sophomore Jeff Gudaitis and junior Joe Turner, scored much-needed points for the Huskies in the 400-meter dash, winning first and second places respectively.
Senior Carl Moe won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and freshman Kyle Nielsen won the javelin throw, each earning a spot at the Regional Championships. Senior Austin Abbott and sophomore Ryan Vu added first-place points for the Huskies in the 1500-meter run and the pole vault, respectively.
The Washington women’s team, despite not having all members present, qualified five for the Regional Championships.
Mid-distance runners, seniors Amanda Miller and Michelle Turner, both placed first in their respective events. Miller won the 800-meter and Turner placed first in the 1500-meter.
Junior Falesha Ankton continued on her success from last week, winning the 100-meter hurdles and setting the fifth fastest time in school history.
On the field, senior pole-vaulter Kelley DiVesta won her event with a regional qualifying mark, and freshman thrower Elisa Bryant tossed her hammer to a second place finish and earned a regional qualifying mark as well.
