As with any business, The Daily has funding needs to allow it to run smoothly. But, unlike any business, The Daily is run primarily by students. This means, a majority of the "extras" are either paid for by students or are not an option for the newspaper. This section outlines some basic needs of The Daily in order to compete in the competitive and growing college newspaper market today.

Sponsor a Student for Conference Travel

Each year, college newspapers around the country gather to celebrate their achievements, both on the editorial and business sides. The Daily, in past years, has been able to send a select number of students to each conference. Our hope for the future is that every student on our staff interested in attending will have the chance to experience and learn through these conferences. They, after all, are the single place where all the competition is gathered.

    CNBAM
The College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers Conference (CNBAM) is hosted in a different city each year and features four days (a weekend) of (fun) intensive workshops and roundtables for students to learn new strategies geared toward increasing advertising sales both locally and nationally as well as focusing on newspaper design achievements both in print and online. Students also have the chance to interview and meet potential employers in newspaper industry across the country.

Cost and Fees: The Daily estimates a total of $1,000.00 ($15,000.00 annually) per student to attend the CNBAM conference. Costs include, flight, lodging, meals and conference fees.

    CMA
The College Media Advisors (CMA) conference is an annual event celebrating the editorial achievements of the newsroom. Students here, have an opportunity to learn about the ethics involved in print news, how to create stories, design pages and manage a newsroom. Here, students also have the chance to seek job and internship opportunities as well as tour the big apple, New York City. In 2006, The Daily received the Apple Award for Best 4-Year College Tabloid in the country and it is our hope that we can soon bring home another Apple Award to add to our collection.

Cost and Fees The Daily estimates a total of $1,500.00 ($20,000.00 annually) per student to attend the CMA conference. Costs include, flight, lodging, meals and conference fees.

A single photograph can provide a reader with an image that thousands of words would not be able to capture nor fit into the paper. As equipment and technology change, newspapers must also adapt. Here, we outline the needs to improve our photography department to allow our printed images to be worth thousands of words.

The Daily is trying to create a safe work environment within our offices in the Communications Building that has seen few improvements since its opening 50 years ago. We are in the process of receiving an estimate to replace the original flooring and remove out-dated wiring. In addition, The Daily hopes to install fully-operational workstations with desks, chairs and computers to create a professional work environment for each student.

Donate to The Daily's Scholarship Fund

Cost and Fees: The Daily estimates $6,400 per student per year.

The Daily seeks to offer University of Washington scholarships for outstanding high school journalists. Our goal is to bring top students into The Daily newsroom. The scholarship will cover one year of tuition. With Alumni support we hope to make the scholarship renewable on a year-by-year basis for a maximum of four years, provided satisfactory progress has been made both in academic work and in the newsroom. Students on The Daily scholarship will be required to work 12 hours a week in the newsroom, and will be paid for their work in addition to their scholarship.
